Breeding for fiber qualities important to end use is increasingly important, as competitiveness within the overall international textile industry requires us as breeders to ensure demand for our fleeces. In other words, the end product made from our fiber must appeal enough to consumers to entice them to buy.

There are a wide variety of products for which alpaca and llama fleeces are well suited, but it is up to each farm to determine the product niche they wish to pursue. What is the highest and best use for your farm's annual harvest? How do you breed, raise, harvest and market your fleece to get the most money for it? Understanding the specific fiber qualities necessary for the multitude of different products which could potentially be made from your fleece leads most breeders to put off finding the answers that are right for their farm, and ultimately bag the fleece for a rainy day.

Because breeding fleece with superlative qualities for end use has been central to our mission statement since 1976, we can help you with answers to those questions and with finding the best fiber niche for your farm to pursue. All our events this year have a strong initiative to educate both breeders and the public about the compelling qualities of alpaca and llama fiber and the necessary elements for profitable end use. We invite you to attend these events and see, touch and understand firsthand the fleece characteristics that are important to end use. Let our myriad of finished products show you how your fleece can go from fiber on the farm to high-demand fashion on the rack.

Cold hard cash is one reward for breeding for fiber qualities important to end use. At the Golden Fleece Futurity at Star Events' Spring Fling Alpaca Sale, you can do just that! Last year's launch was so successful; we are repeating the Golden Fleece Futurity at the 2008 Spring Fling. For more information and to register your fleeces, visit www.springflingauction.com.
